Dawg Prints Is Going Green

UW labs and libraries that use the Dawg Prints system have begun to roll out changes to make Dawg Prints more green. In addition to using 100% recycled paper in printers and copiers, labs have also begun to change their default queues to print two-sided, thus saving paper. These changes will occur throughout the quarter, so keep an eye out for default two-sided printing in your favorite lab.

Students: Sign Up for UW Windows Live & UW Google Apps Sept. 28

For the first time ever, the UW is offering email, calendaring, and other collaborative tools "in the cloud" for students, who can sign up for UW Windows Live and UW Google Apps beginning Sept. 28. Both vendors will be at the Student Tech Fair on Sept. 28, along with UW Technology, to showcase the services and answer questions. You can sign up online or at the fair!

New Anti-Virus Software: Protect Your Office and Home Computers

All UW students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use the UW’s new centrally licensed anti-virus/anti-malware software from Sophos on their office and home computers at no cost. Start the quarter off right! This new software is available now from the UWare site. Get it today to help secure your computers.

E-RESOURCE: Academic OneFile

Find scholarly and general interest articles quickly using Academic OneFile, a premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles in the sciences, technology, medicine, the arts, and other subjects. It also contains hundreds of podcasts and transcripts from NPR, CNN, and the CBC. Academic OneFile replaces Expanded Academic Index with even more content. This UW-restricted resource is on trial until June 30, 2011. Try it today.

UW Student Technology Fair: Sept. 28

Drop by the Student Tech Fair at UW Seattle's Odegaard Undergraduate Library, 2nd floor, during Dawg Daze on Monday, Sept. 28, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Get information on the UW’s latest technology offerings for students including UW Windows Live, UW Google Apps, and the UW’s new iPhone app. This "From the Earth to the Clouds" event features presentations on cloud, mobile, and green computing.

Upgrades to Student Facilities Funded by the Student Tech Fee

With the aid of three generous grants from the Student Technology Fee Committee (STFC), LST spent September break upgrading equipment and software in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. These enhancements were made in response to the findings of the 2005 and 2008 Surveys on Learning and Scholarly Technologies carried out by LST, where students highlighted improvements to technology facilities as their top priority.

UWICK Discontinued: New Tools for Safe and Secure Computing

The UW Internet Connectivity Kit (UWICK) CD-ROM is no longer available from the University Book Store as of Autumn Quarter 2009. However, now you can go to the new Tools for Safe and Secure Computing Web page for quick access to a basic set of software tools for fighting viruses, doing secure file transfer and terminal sessions, and other common tasks. All of the tools linked to on the page are free, either as freeware or because the UW has paid for the right for you to use them.

Connect to UW Resources on the Go: m.UW for iPhone

Mobile_UW The UW's new iPhone application offers convenient mobile access to campus resources - such as the UW Seattle campus map and online directory - on the go. If you use a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or a "text phone" you'll have access to much of the same information. Go to m.uw.edu on the Web to learn more and see a simulation, or on your mobile device to get the app. In the first ten days, there were over 3500 downloads.

Digital Media Demo Day at UW: Sept. 29


Camcorder Faculty, staff, and students are invited to Digital Media Demo Day at UW, presented by UW’s Digital Media Special Interest Group and UWTV. Don't miss several presentations from Sony representatives on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in UWTV's Kane Hall studio. Explore tapeless workflow options, watch camera demonstrations, and check out new digital signage solutions. Attendees will also have a chance to win a Sony Blu-Ray HD player. Doors open at 9:00 a.m.

Prepare for Autumn Quarter With Catalyst Tools Workshops: Sept. 16/17

WebQ If you would like to get your course online before Autumn Quarter begins, attend one of our free September workshops. You can learn how to give your course an online presence, set up a WebQ survey or quiz, or use Catalyst GradeBook to track and submit grades. These workshops are free to anyone with a UW NetID, but registration is required.
