Free Online Microsoft Training for Washington Residents

Elearning4 Online training on Microsoft software is free to Washington residents through a state WorkSource career development program with Microsoft. More than 1,000 courses are provided, including technical training for IT professionals (with certifications available) and digital literacy for computer beginners.

Wi-Fi Service for Patients and Visitors at UWMC and Harborview

Wireless3 A free wireless Patients and Visitors service is now in place at UW Medical Center (UWMC) and Harborview Medical Center (HMC). No special UW login or password is required. This  is available in all UWMC and HMC locations with Wi-Fi coverage. Thanks to bandwidth limits on this service, the performance of the staff network is not expected to be affected. This two-year collaborative effort involved staff from UWMC, HMC, UW Medicine IT, and UW-IT. See IT Connect for other UW wireless information.

UW iSchool Hosts Sixth Annual iConference in February

Seattle The UW iSchool is hosting iConference 2011, an international gathering of information scholars and professionals that fosters interaction and collaboration on a global scale, in Seattle February 8-11. The conference will feature industry panels on “Privacy in the Cloud” and “Big Data”, as well as papers, workshops and posters on information management and security, social media, health informatics, and more.

Laptop Did you know you could register your laptop and electronics with UW Police to help recover them if they are stolen? Most UW Students Need to Choose New Email Provider by June 30

Email2 Students who use UW Email will need to switch to UW Windows Live, UW Google Apps, or arrange for their own email service before June 30, 2011. UW-IT notified students of this change by email earlier this quarter. The following students are exempt: clinical students, medical students, graduate students in the School of Medicine, and students who are also staff or faculty.  Exceptions for other groups, such as School of Dentistry students, are in progress. Additional details and steps to take are online.

Shwetak.Patel UW Computer Science and Engineering assistant professor Shwetak Patel won the 2010 TechFlash Newsmaker of the Year Award this month.
