Free Computing Workshops at UW Seattle

Keyboard Throughout Spring Quarter, UW-IT will offer a wide variety of free computing workshops. Topics include Web publishing and computing fundamentals, as well as multimedia and productivity software from Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, and others. Full schedule and detailed workshop descriptions are online. All workshops are taught by student-instructors. Most are walk-in; just bring your UW NetID and Husky card, or sign up to ensure a seat.

WebQ Tool Used to Develop Seattle Public Safety Survey

Webq2 When the City of Seattle wanted to develop an online Seattle Public Safety Survey, it turned to the UW Evans School of Public Affairs. Graduate students drafted the survey, using Catalyst WebQ, to gather residents’ views of public safety and the Seattle Police Department. Results are due in May.

UW Professor Uses Technology to Engage Students in New Ways

Eisenberg UW Information School Professor Mike Eisenberg combines Catalyst Tools and other smart technologies to engage students and encourage classroom participation. Students work in groups to create multimedia presentations that inspire them to interact with information and ideas in new ways. Billing Relief for Calls and Texts to Japan for AT&T Customers

Japan2 In response to the recent Japanese disaster, AT&T is offering billing relief for their customers calling and texting family and friends in Japan. From March 11 through March 31, credit will be given automatically to postpaid wireless customers for international long distance charges for calls and text messages from the U.S. to Japan. Residential wireline customers can seek credits for up to 60 minutes of direct dial calling to Japan.

E-RESOURCE: Criminal Justice Abstracts

Justice Criminal Justice Abstracts isn’t just for criminal justice researchers. It also covers criminology and related disciplines such as forensics, policing, criminal law, substance abuse, prisons, and psychology. This UW-restricted database, provided by UW Libraries, contains indexes and summaries of international journals, books, reports, and dissertations.

These tools rely on UW Web Services, supported by UW-IT, that provide a bridge to the institutional data used by these applications. Mobile UW Now Available for Android Smartphones

M.uw Get UW information on the go via the UW’s mobile phone app, m.UW, now available for your Android smartphone, as it has been for the iPhone and BlackBerry. Download the Android version from the Android Market to access the UW course catalog, campus directories, maps, news, sports, and photos.

Developing a UW Document Imaging/Management System

Disc A collaborative effort to develop a flexible, UW-wide Document Imaging and Management System (DIMS) is underway. DIMS will capture and store electronic versions of paper documents, addressing a long-time need for increased workflow efficiencies in paper-heavy manual processes. A pilot project will automate components of the admissions process at UW Seattle and UW Bothell, in partnership with Financial Management, the Office of Research, the Office of Planning and Budgeting, and UW-IT. Longer-term goals are to implement DIMS across other University units and integrate it with other UW systems.

UW CSE Accessibility Capstone Premiere: March 14

Android The Accessibility Capstone Premiere presents posters and demonstrations of six design projects from CSE 481H. These accessibility-oriented applications for the Google Android feature exciting new ideas such as The Phone Wand, which uses vibration and orientation feedback for navigation, and Street Sign Reader, for people with limited vision. Presentations are March 14, 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., in the Microsoft Atrium of the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering at UW Seattle.

Use UW Groups in Catalyst Tools and UW Google Apps

Group4 With UW Groups you can manage lists of team members and collaborators in a single place. Now, if you can view the membership of a UW Group, you can use UW Groups in Catalyst Tools in WebQ, QuickPoll, Collect It, CommonView, GoPost, ShareSpaces, etc. You can also now activate UW Groups for use in UW Google Apps to share Google documents, sites, calendars, and other resources with members of UW Groups.

New Data Storage Services Offered to UW Researchers

Server Two large-file storage services are now available for UW researchers. The Shared File Service provides general purpose file storage with high-speed capability for sharing large datasets. The Archive Storage Service is a redundant, tape-based repository for rarely accessed data. Both use the lolo file-based storage system, are designed to be cost-effective, and require a minimum three-year commitment to purchase. Offered through UW-IT, these services were developed in collaboration with the eScience Institute.

Updated Sound Studio at UW Seattle; Remix Competition

Sound-studio A professional audio recording and editing facility in Odegaard was recently updated by UW-IT with industry-standard hardware and software, thanks to support from the Student Technology Fee. The Sound Studio is available by reservation at no charge to current students, faculty, and staff. You can attend a workshop to familiarize yourself with the new capabilities. Create a new theme song for the Sound Studio Web site and enter it in the Remix Competition by March 11 to win one of three Skull Candy headphones.
