Free Computing Workshops at UW Seattle Start June 25

Workshop_60Enjoy a free UW-IT computing workshop this summer and get hands-on experience with Adobe Creative Suite, audio creation tools (Reason, Audacity, others), Web development (HTML, CSS), and more. Designed and taught by student instructors at a beginner or intermediate level, these walk-in classes are for current students, faculty, and staff with a UW NetID and Husky card. See the online curriculum and descriptions and sign up to ensure a seat.

Video Features Tegrity’s Impact on Teaching and Learning at UW

Tegrity3_60A new short video features UW faculty and students talking about their experiences using Tegrity, a lecture capture tool for recording and publishing lectures for viewing on the Web. Tegrity is made available to all three campuses by UW-IT, and supports the UW’s 2y2d Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century Initiative. Thanks to the UW Provost’s Office and the Center for Teaching and Learning for producing this video.

E-RESOURCE: Paley Center for Media iCollection

Paley_60The Paley Center for Media iCollection provides streaming video for over 15,000 television and radio programs, including advertisements, for research and education. Use this resource provided by UW Libraries to find programs by title, airdate, or subject, and create a personalized collection. Check out the Center’s Special Collections such as the 9/11 one with over 1,000 hours of programming from fifty countries.

UW Directory: Updated Look, Works on Mobile

Dir_60The UW Directory has been updated with the familiar UW branding, and now you can easily search for someone whether you are using your mobile phone, iPad, desktop, or laptop. This responsive design approach to making key UW information usable on all devices no matter what the size screen has been a collaborative effort of University Marketing and UW-IT. Free Assistive Technology Software

Athens2_60An online directory of 161 free, open source, assistive technology (AT) applications is available thanks to the University of Athens Speech and Accessibility Laboratory, which tested each one. AT provides methods of using technology to accomplish tasks formerly out of reach for some people. You can browse the software by disability (blindness, dyslexia, hearing, low vision, motor/dexterity, speech) or category. Each entry includes a screenshot, system requirements, download links, and more information and hints, as described in a recent About.com article.

Technology Recharge Fee at UW Remains the Same for FY 2013

Cables2_60The Technology Recharge Fee that funds critical information technology services provided by UW Information Technology will remain the same for FY 2013. The fee, paid by all UW academic and administrative units, covers a basic bundle of services that includes wired and Wi-Fi networks, UW NetID access management, administrative systems infrastructure, basic backups and storage, Catalyst Web Tools, software licensing, MyUW, and more.
