Submit a UW Student Technology Fee Proposal by Jan. 11

Stf_60The UW Student Technology Fee Committee is calling for proposals to help meet the technology needs of UW students in furthering their educational and research goals. The proposals should be for one-time capital investment funding in six categories: computer labs, remote computing, frontier technology, machinery and research equipment, collaborative and portable, and software. Read the Request for Proposals for details. Submissions are due January 11, 2013.

Use of Tegrity: UW Lecture Capture Tool Report

Tegrity3_60A large majority of UW students feel that reviewing Tegrity lecture capture recordings contributes to their learning, according to the findings in UW-IT’s just released report. An assessment, undertaken in Winter and Spring Quarters, aimed to learn how Tegrity was being used in courses on all three campuses, identify best practices, uncover any unmet support needs or obstacles, and find out how instructors and students would like to use Tegrity in the future. New UW Digital Asset Management Service: MediaAMP

Mediaamp3_60MediaAMP can help UW units manage and deliver digital media—especially streaming video and audio—to mobile devices, Web platforms and enterprise systems, while meeting information privacy requirements. This subscription service, offered through UW-IT, provides automated workflows, metrics and reporting, and a Web-based interface to manage your library of digital content. MediaAMP uses a cloud-based platform, and was designed to address the specific needs of clinical, research, teaching and learning, and archival environments. Learn more.

E-RESOURCE: History Vault—Black Freedom Struggle

History2_60Interested in the civil rights movement or want to research the Voting Rights Act of 1965? With History Vault, provided through UW Libraries, researchers can find primary documents in a digital format. The “Black Freedom Struggle in the 20th Century” module houses collections of primary source documents from civil rights organizations and federal government agency records as well as the personal papers of influential African Americans.

If there is a tool or process in use at the UW that you would like to see presented at the Spring Quarter 2013 Ignite! event, please send your suggestions.

UW Web Enhancements; New UW Alert Banner Coming

W_60The University Marketing Web Team has released an updated UW WordPress theme that now incorporates full accessibility and responsive (mobile friendly) design. Sites hosted by Marketing have already been updated; UW Webmasters who run their own WordPress installs are encouraged to download the latest version. Marketing is also working with the UW community to create a UW theme for Drupal 7. Lastly, all UW Webmasters are invited to test the new responsive UW Alert Banner on their sites before it goes live November 23.

Google ID Now Available for Catalyst Web Tools Login

Webq2If you are collaborating with colleagues at another institution and want to use Catalyst Web Tools, there is now an easy alternative. Instead of logging in with a sponsored UW NetID or a Protect Network ID, they can use Google ID. Google accounts are free and can be created quickly. (Note: A Google ID is username@gmail.com whereas a UW Google Apps ID is username@uw.edu.) Learn more.
