Cell Phone Plan Savings for UW Employees, Students, Departments

Smartphones_60Want to save money on your cell phone plan? UW-IT negotiated special discounts with AT&T and T-Mobile that continue for 2013. The discounts range from 15-18% for UW employees, 10-15% for UW students, and 15-21% for UW departments, depending on the carrier. Other vendors may also offer discounts; inquire directly with vendor.

UW NetID Weblogin Now More Mobile-Friendly

Uwnetid_60A more mobile-friendly version of the UW NetID weblogin service launched December 18, making it easier to access protected resources that use the weblogin service any time, from any device. This update preserves the familiar look-and-feel of the login page, but it introduces an underlying design that is more responsive to the variety of mobile devices and tablets in use today.

UW to Help Develop Ultra High-Speed Network in Seattle

Seattle4_60Ultra high-speed broadband and wireless networks will be coming to 12 Seattle neighborhoods as a pilot project of a new partnership, announced December 13, involving the City of Seattle, the UW, and broadband developer Gigabit Squared. The city will lease existing unused fiber to Gigabit Squared to support this effort, aimed at stimulating business opportunities, spurring advancements in fields such as health care and education, and enhancing quality of life for residents and businesses in Seattle. This demonstration aligns with the Gig.U initiative.

New Thought-Provoking Talks in CSE Series on UWTV

This popular series on UWTV has also added the "Harvey Mudd Story" on changes in gender disparity in computer science education. IT Accessibility Video Features UW President

Mjyoung_60UW President Michael Young kicks off a 15-minute video of university leaders and CIOs speaking on the importance of accessible technology and products. The idea for "IT Accessibility: What Campus Leaders Have to Say" came out of a technology accessibility discussion at EDUCAUSE last year. It debuted at this year's conference, and now is available for everyone on YouTube. It was produced by the DO-IT Center and UW's Computer Science and Engineering, with funds from the National Science Foundation.

New Educational App for Radiology Developed at UW

Radlinks_60A new medical educational app--RadLinks--brings hundreds of Internet radiology resources to medical students and radiologists. Developed by radiologists at the UW, VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and Seattle Children's Hospital, this hand-curated collection covers radiology educational Web sites, teaching files, online lectures, and more. It is designed specifically for viewing on tablets. Watch the RadLinks video and download this free application for your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.
