E-RESOURCE: eHRAF World Cultures Database

Ehraf_60This ethnographic database contains a collection of thousands of books and articles on cultures from all regions of the world, uniquely organized by cultures and ethnic groups. eHRAF World Cultures includes brief overviews of cultures on general topics such as demography, economy, social organization and more. Students can browse a single culture or conduct cross-cultural research within regions or throughout the world. Produced by Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) at Yale, this UW-restricted resource is provided by UW Libraries and has a video tutorial.

Baltimore_60Explore Baltimore from 1893 to 1988 through the pages of the Baltimore Afro-American, one of a collection of digitized ethnic newspapers provided by the UW Libraries. The published word has long provided a means of building identity, sharing viewpoints, and disseminating media images for ethnic, alternative, minority, or marginalized communities. The Baltimore Afro-American exemplifies the role of a non-mainstream newspaper in reflecting the diversity, vigor, and strife typical of any multicultural society.

E-RESOURCE: Filmakers Library of Online Contemporary Documentaries

Filmakers_60The Filmakers Library is an online resource for contemporary and award-winning documentaries widely used in humanities and social sciences classrooms and now available through UW Libraries (UW-restricted). Topics span race and gender studies, human rights, criminal justice, the environment, health, political science, arts and literature, and more. The site includes tools for making video clips to annotate, and some have online transcripts available as well.

Paley_60The Paley Center for Media iCollection provides streaming video for over 15,000 television and radio programs, including advertisements, for research and education. Use this resource provided by UW Libraries to find programs by title, airdate, or subject, and create a personalized collection. Check out the Center’s Special Collections such as the 9/11 one with over 1,000 hours of programming from fifty countries.

The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema is illuminated in this collection of popular old movie periodicals, including Cinema Reporter, dating back to 1943, and Cine Mundial from the 1950s. Film flyers, movie stills, reviews, advertisements, and other primary source documents are included in this e-resource, provided as part of UW Libraries Cinema Studies Guide.

E-RESOURCE: Dream, Design, Build: UW Architecture Student Drawing Collection, 1914-1947

Architecture_60What do Minoru Yamasaki, designer of the World Trade Center, Victor Steinbrueck, who played a role in the Seattle Space Needle design, and Ken Anderson, art director for Disney’s "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", have in common? Their student drawings are included in the UW Architecture Student Drawing Collection, 1914-1947. So far, a small number of drawings have been conserved, and this online exhibit lets you appreciate examples from the collection and the teaching and design legacy they represent.
