Underground & Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels is a scholarly, primary-source database focused on comic books and graphic novels for adults. It includes original works of both famous and overlooked artists, with interviews, criticism, and journal articles that document the continual growth and evolution of this art form. This ethnographic database contains a collection of thousands of books and articles on cultures from all regions of the world, uniquely organized by cultures and ethnic groups. eHRAF World Cultures includes brief overviews of cultures on general topics such as demography, economy, social organization and more. Explore Baltimore from 1893 to 1988 through the pages of the Baltimore Afro-American, one of a collection of digitized ethnic newspapers provided by the UW Libraries. The published word has long provided a means of building identity, sharing viewpoints, and disseminating media images for ethnic, alternative, minority, or marginalized communities. The Baltimore Afro-American exemplifies the role of a non-mainstream newspaper in reflecting the diversity, vigor, and strife typical of any multicultural society.

Researchers can access nearly thirty years’ worth of step-by-step laboratory protocols from the life and biomedical sciences, written and reviewed by experts in their fields, using SpringerProtocols. These protocols are time-tested and easily reproducible. Subjects range from biochemistry, cell biology, and infectious diseases to genetics, immunology, and plant sciences, with protocols from a wide variety of well-respected sources. With History Vault, provided through UW Libraries, researchers can find primary documents in a digital format. The “Black Freedom Struggle in the 20th Century” module houses collections of primary source documents from civil rights organizations and federal government agency records as well as the personal papers of influential African Americans.

Explore the cultural and political evolution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community through award-winning films, documentaries, interviews and archival footage on LGBT Studies in Video. This UW-restricted site provided by UW Libraries is searchable, includes transcripts, and has an embedded video player for creating clips, which enables instructors to deliver video content to students on course Web pages.

The Filmakers Library is an online resource for contemporary and award-winning documentaries widely used in humanities and social sciences classrooms and now available through UW Libraries (UW-restricted). Topics span race and gender studies, human rights, criminal justice, the environment, health, political science, arts and literature, and more. The site includes tools for making video clips to annotate, and some have online transcripts available as well.

The Paley Center for Media iCollection provides streaming video for over 15,000 television and radio programs, including advertisements, for research and education. Use this resource provided by UW Libraries to find programs by title, airdate, or subject, and create a personalized collection. Check out the Center’s Special Collections such as the 9/11 one with over 1,000 hours of programming from fifty countries.

Interested in film? The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema is illuminated in this collection of popular old movie periodicals, including Cinema Reporter, dating back to 1943, and Cine Mundial from the 1950s. Film flyers, movie stills, reviews, advertisements, and other primary source documents are included in this e-resource, provided as part of UW Libraries Cinema Studies Guide.

What do Minoru Yamasaki, designer of the World Trade Center, Victor Steinbrueck, who played a role in the Seattle Space Needle design, and Ken Anderson, art director for Disney’s "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", have in common? Their student drawings are included in the UW Architecture Student Drawing Collection, 1914-1947. So far, a small number of drawings have been conserved, and this online exhibit lets you appreciate examples from the collection and the teaching and design legacy they represent.
