UW Google Apps: New Tools Continue to Be Added

Google-plus2_60UW-IT continues to expand the core UW Google Apps service (Email, Calendar, Docs, Sites, and Talk) by enabling new apps you can choose to activate. Those added recently include Chrome Sync, FeedBurner, iGoogle, Latitude, Map Maker, News, and Places. Earlier this year, Blogger, Google+, Google Code, Picasa, Voice, YouTube, and more were added. All undergo a UW enterprise risk review process first. These apps are not covered by the existing UW contract with Google that ensures certain student data protections. Support is provided by Google. UW Email for Students Ends June 30: Choose a New Provider

No-email Students who use UW Email (Web Alpine) need to choose a new email service (UW Windows Live, UW Google Apps, or a third-party service) before June 30, 2011. See Moving Off UW Email for details and exceptions, steps you need to take now, and FAQs.

Data Storage Changes for Faculty/Staff in March and July

Disc Starting March 1, the amount of disk space allocated to faculty and staff will be split out by service: UW Email—also known as UW Deskmail—(5 GB), Streaming Media (3 GB), Web Publishing (1 GB), and Linux Shell (1 GB). Shared accounts will have 1 GB space for each service, except for Streaming Media (3 GB). You will be able to manage your allocation and get additional space charged to a UW budget number beginning July 1, 2011 via the self-service Manage Your UW NetID Resources Web page. See details in IT Connect.

Most UW Students Need to Choose New Email Provider by June 30

Email2 Students who use UW Email will need to switch to UW Windows Live, UW Google Apps, or arrange for their own email service before June 30, 2011. UW-IT notified students of this change by email earlier this quarter. The following students are exempt: clinical students, medical students, graduate students in the School of Medicine, and students who are also staff or faculty.  Exceptions for other groups, such as School of Dentistry students, are in progress. Additional details and steps to take are online.

Email The UW offers you two UW-branded sets of online collaborative tools that include calendaring, email, chat, storage, and more. Read about what you get with UW Windows Live and UW Google Apps, and then sign up at your Manage UW NetID Resources page. You can sign up for both, but select just one for your email.

Students: Sign Up for UW Windows Live & UW Google Apps Sept. 28

For the first time ever, the UW is offering email, calendaring, and other collaborative tools "in the cloud" for students, who can sign up for UW Windows Live and UW Google Apps beginning Sept. 28. Both vendors will be at the Student Tech Fair on Sept. 28, along with UW Technology, to showcase the services and answer questions. You can sign up online or at the fair!

Shorter UW Email Address Now Available

Computer_mouse You now have the option to use "@uw.edu" for your UW email. It's easier to use with mobile technology and reinforces our "UW" name. To receive email at your_uwnetid@uw.edu, just tell your contacts to use it. However, to send email from your_uwnetid@uw.edu, follow the instructions online. This joint effort of UW Marketing and UW Technology is part of the UW Reputation Building Initiative.
