Cyberinfrastructure for the Physical Sciences Workshop: Feb. 12-13

Space_60Earth, ocean, sky, and space researchers and technologists will discuss the cyberinfrastructure challenges they face in their respective fields at the University of Hawaii (UoH) February 12-13. Co-sponsored by the UW, UC Davis, and UoH, the event provides an opportunity to explore—with Microsoft and Internet2 NET+ Services—the role of commercial cloud offerings in supporting the emerging big data research needs. New Data Storage Services Offered to UW Researchers

Server Two large-file storage services are now available for UW researchers. The Shared File Service provides general purpose file storage with high-speed capability for sharing large datasets. The Archive Storage Service is a redundant, tape-based repository for rarely accessed data. Both use the lolo file-based storage system, are designed to be cost-effective, and require a minimum three-year commitment to purchase. Offered through UW-IT, these services were developed in collaboration with the eScience Institute.

ECAR Case Study Expands on Technology Research at the UW

Research The Educause Center for Applied Research (ECAR) recently published a case study authored by LST and the UW eScience Institute. Titled Scientific Advances and Information Technology: Meeting Researchers’ Needs in a New Era of Discovery, the report discusses key findings of two University of Washington research projects: Conversations with UW Research Leaders, and the UW 2008 Faculty Survey on Learning and Scholarly Technologies. June 14: Hear About Web Services APIs at eScience Pub Night

Singh The UW eScience Institute works with researchers to solve problems when dealing with large-scale data issues. Every 2nd Monday at 6:00 p.m., eScience Pub Night meets at the College Inn Pub for informal discussions. On June 14, Deepak Singh with Amazon Web Services talks about the ability to provision computing and storage resources, and scale them up and down with Web services APIs.

UW eScience Institute Serves "eScience on Tap" - Feb. 8

Mary_Lidstrom The UW eScience Institute works with researchers to solve problems they face when dealing with large-scale data issues. On the 2nd Monday of the month, "eScience on Tap" meets at the College Inn Pub for informal discussions. On Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m., Mary Lidstrom, UW Professor of Microbiology and Vice Provost for Research, will talk about the eScience Institute and its role at the UW.
