Free Adobe CS6 Workshops at UW Seattle: May 23

Cs6_60Learn how to use the photo and video editing software in Creative Suite 6 (CS6) at free workshops with Adobe experts on May 23 at UW Seattle. Three CS6 sessions, hosted by UW-IT's workshop program, are being offered: Premiere and After Effects (9:30–11:30 a.m.), Basic Photoshop (2:30–4:30 p.m.), and Advanced Photoshop (7:00–9:00 p.m.). Current UW students, faculty, and staff can get details and sign up to ensure a place.

Phishing and the UW: CISO Seminar May 9

Known as phishing, this devious practice alludes to setting out bait in hopes you will click that link and reveal your password or confidential financial information that is then stolen. Learn more at a seminar on Phishing and the UW hosted by the UW Office of the Chief Information Security Officer on May 9, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the UW Tower Auditorium.

Data Privacy: UW Seattle Event Rescheduled for Feb. 16

Privacy_60Join the UW Office of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Information Security and Privacy Seminar roundtable discussions on February 16 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the UW Tower Auditorium. This event for UW faculty, staff, and researchers (rescheduled from January 26 due to the snow) starts with a 30-minute presentation on data privacy, followed by discussions, including one on mobile device security. Teaching, Learning With Technology: Ignite! Jan. 25

IgniteLearn about innovative uses of technology at the UW for teaching and learning at the upcoming Ignite! event. Hear 5-minute talks from UW faculty about using the Canvas eLearning system to hold virtual office hours, SQLShare to analyze extremely large data sets, back-channel chat to keep students engaged and more, with a brief Q&A after each presentation. Key findings from UW-IT’s 2011 Triennial Surveys on Teaching, Learning, and Research Technologies will be presented, and Canvas, MyPlan, Tegrity, and Yarn will be available for hands-on demos. UW Faculty: Want to Try eText in Your Class?

Etext_60Starting Spring Quarter, UW professors and lecturers can participate in a UW-IT electronic text (eText) pilot in one or more of their classes to experiment with this new technology, help improve student learning, and contribute to this research effort. Two eText platforms (CourseSmart and CourseLoad) are provided, allowing flexibility and side-by-side comparison. Attend an informational meeting on January 26 at 9:30 a.m. in Odegaard Undergraduate Library 220 or February 1 at 3:30 p.m. in Mary Gates Hall 241, both at UW Seattle, or send email to help@uw.edu. SuperComputing 2011 in Seattle: UW a Key Player and Supporter

Supercomputing FairSeattle last week hosted an international supercomputing event showcasing the high-performance computing needed by UW researchers for analyzing, storing, and sharing massive datasets. The UW played a key role in SC11, with UW-IT and its engineers on the Pacific Northwest Gigapop team providing the fiber optic cabling, racks and power to help make the event possible. UW scientists from the eScience Institute, Computer Science & Engineering, and other units also participated. Read more in UW Today.

Bill Gates: CSE Distinguished Lecture Airs November 15

Bill GatesTune in to UWTV on November 15 at 8:00 p.m. to see Bill Gates in a rare discussion about technology and the application of computer science to solve challenges in areas from education to energy to water quality. The program, “The Opportunity Ahead: A Conversation with Bill Gates,” was filmed last month as part of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Distinguished Lecture Series. Supercomputing '11 Education Program: Applications Due July 31

Sc11 College faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and students considering careers in STEM disciplines are encouraged to apply for the Education Program at the SC11 conference, held November 12-15 in Seattle. The program aims to help integrate high performance computing and computational science and engineering techniques into the classroom and research. You can request the $380 registration fee be covered when you apply by July 31. See the sample application.

UW CSE Accessibility Capstone Premiere: March 14

Android The Accessibility Capstone Premiere presents posters and demonstrations of six design projects from CSE 481H. These accessibility-oriented applications for the Google Android feature exciting new ideas such as The Phone Wand, which uses vibration and orientation feedback for navigation, and Street Sign Reader, for people with limited vision. Presentations are March 14, 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., in the Microsoft Atrium of the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering at UW Seattle.
