Free Webinar Series on Accessibility: June 12 and Beyond

Cell Phone Plan Discounts Save Money for UW Users

Cellphone More than 26,000 UW students, faculty, and staff are getting significant discounts (about $3 million a year) available through contracts negotiated by UW-IT with cellular carriers. If you are a AT&T or T-Mobile customer, you can contact them about receiving the discount. The AT&T discounts are 21 percent for cellular services paid by the UW and, for personal plans, are 18 percent for faculty and staff, and 10 percent for students. T-Mobile has a 15 percent discount.

Mobile UW Now Available for Android Smartphones

M.uw Get UW information on the go via the UW’s mobile phone app, m.UW, now available for your Android smartphone, as it has been for the iPhone and BlackBerry. Download the Android version from the Android Market to access the UW course catalog, campus directories, maps, news, sports, and photos.

UW CSE Accessibility Capstone Premiere: March 14

Android The Accessibility Capstone Premiere presents posters and demonstrations of six design projects from CSE 481H. These accessibility-oriented applications for the Google Android feature exciting new ideas such as The Phone Wand, which uses vibration and orientation feedback for navigation, and Street Sign Reader, for people with limited vision. Presentations are March 14, 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m., in the Microsoft Atrium of the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering at UW Seattle.

Centralized UW Cell Phone Service Ends July 1; Smartphone Support Available

Cellphone Effective July 1, 2010, UW Information Technology's (UW-IT) cell phone service changes from a centralized model for billing and equipment ordering to a self-service model for UW departments. Smartphone setup (one-time fee) and basic smartphone support (monthly fee) are still available; see Mobile Technology in the UW-IT Service Catalog.

OneBusAway: UW/King County Collaboration Wins Technology Award

Bus OneBusAway is a King County transit tool developed with the UW that lets you track your bus by phone or online. It was named "Best use of Technology in the Government, Nonprofit or Educational Sector" at the Washington Technology Industry Association's 15th annual industry achievement awards. UW Team Aims to Make Sign Language by Cell Phone Commonplace

ASL Making wireless cell phone communication through sign language a reality in the U.S is the goal of MobileASL, a video compression project at the University of Washington. Professors and graduate students from Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and the Information School do the research.

An engaging two-minute video tells the story of m.UW, which has been downloaded thousands of times in 33 countries. Exclamation_point UW Alert disseminates official information during emergencies or crisis situations that may disrupt the normal operation of the UW or threaten the health or safety of the UW community. The UW’s new m.UW BlackBerry app - like the iPhone app already available - offers course catalogs, campus directories, maps, news, photos, and sports scores in a format optimized for that device.

Amazon UW computer scientists are using Android, the open-source mobile operating system championed by Google, to transform a cell phone into a flexible data-collection tool, reports Uweek. Their free Open Data Kit is used by organizations around the world that need inexpensive ways to gather information in areas with little infrastructure.

Connect to UW Resources on the Go: m.UW for iPhone

Mobile_UW The UW's new iPhone application offers convenient mobile access to campus resources - such as the UW Seattle campus map and online directory - on the go. If you use a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or a "text phone" you'll have access to much of the same information. Go to m.uw.edu on the Web to learn more and see a simulation, or on your mobile device to get the app. In the first ten days, there were over 3500 downloads.

Register Your Home and Cell Phone Number to Avoid Telemarketer Calls

Iphone_pair To avoid receiving calls from telemarketers (which could cost you on your cell phone, depending on how your minutes are charged on your plan), register your phone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry. It takes 31 days from the time you register for it to go into effect.

Get CPR/Choking Videos via Your Smart Phone

Android Now you can download free cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking aid training applications to your iPhone or Google app compatible phone (Android). Dr. Mickey Eisenberg, UW Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director for King County Emergency Medical Services, worked to make these life-saving techniques available to a wider audience. The one-minute videos are adapted from those on the Learn CPR Web site, which has details on how to get these mobile apps.
