The UW is the first educational institution to provide campus information on BlackBerry handheld devices. The UW’s new m.UW BlackBerry app - like the iPhone app already available - offers course catalogs, campus directories, maps, news, photos, and sports scores in a format optimized for that device.
UW computer scientists are using Android, the open-source mobile operating system championed by Google, to transform a cell phone into a flexible data-collection tool, reports Uweek. Their free Open Data Kit is used by organizations around the world that need inexpensive ways to gather information in areas with little infrastructure.

The UW's new iPhone application offers convenient mobile access to campus resources - such as the UW Seattle campus map and online directory - on the go. If you use a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or a "text phone" you'll have access to much of the same information. Go to m.uw.edu on the Web to learn more and see a simulation, or on your mobile device to get the app. In the first ten days, there were over 3500 downloads.
