Cyberinfrastructure for the Physical Sciences Workshop: Feb. 12-13

Space_60Earth, ocean, sky, and space researchers and technologists will discuss the cyberinfrastructure challenges they face in their respective fields at the University of Hawaii (UoH) February 12-13. Co-sponsored by the UW, UC Davis, and UoH, the event provides an opportunity to explore—with Microsoft and Internet2 NET+ Services—the role of commercial cloud offerings in supporting the emerging big data research needs. Solving Puzzles for Science: Watch UW 360 November 3

UW360 Watch UW 360 at 10:00 p.m. on November 3 to learn about Foldit, a game conceived by UW scientists to engage people in helping to advance knowledge in biochemistry. Players of all ages fold long chains of amino acids into compact three-dimensional shapes, and can excel over computers when a folding problem requires an intuitive leap or strategy shift.

GrassPortal: Ecological and Evolutionary Data for Teaching and Research

Stromberg Caroline Strömberg, UW Assistant Professor of Biology and Curator of Paleobotany in the Burke Museum, is involved in developing GrassPortal. Grasses have a major influence on climate and form the cornerstone of food production. GrassPortal will integrate grass species names, descriptions, distribution, and ecological data with evolutionary information in a Web interface, providing researchers and students with tools for interacting, discovering, and extracting information.

Get CPR/Choking Videos via Your Smart Phone

Android Now you can download free cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking aid training applications to your iPhone or Google app compatible phone (Android). Dr. Mickey Eisenberg, UW Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director for King County Emergency Medical Services, worked to make these life-saving techniques available to a wider audience. The one-minute videos are adapted from those on the Learn CPR Web site, which has details on how to get these mobile apps.
