Online TV for UW Residence Hall Students: Testing Underway

Tv_60More than 1700 UW residence hall students are watching TV news, sports, and more from their laptops anywhere on campus in a trial run that started in April and runs through spring quarter. The Tivli online TV service provides 32 channels and will likely expand to 72 if implemented in the fall, reports The Daily. Access to HBO and HBO GO was just added this month. Authorized students can point their laptop Web browser to uw.tivli.com. Access to non-local cable channels is only available to HuskyTV subscribers, including UW students living in residence halls.

UWTV: New Web Site Design, Easy Access

Uwtv_60UWTV’s newly reinvented Web site features an all new layout, making it easier to explore and view video produced by UWTV and campus partners. You’ll still find episodes of favorite UWTV series like UW|360 and Four Peaks, plus an entire catalog of thought-provoking lectures, research, and student activities. A collaborative effort of UWTV and the UW Marketing Web team, the site kept the same address: uwtv.org.

HuskyTV Goes Digital: Improved Picture, More Channels and HD

Huskytv_60HuskyTV, the UW cable television service, has converted to digital, bringing better picture and sound quality and more channels. HuskyTV now offers 130 news, education, sports, and entertainment channels, 16 in HD, as well as non-English programming. Learn more at HuskyTV Information and Listings. A trial streaming video service this spring will let subscribers watch live TV on their laptop or tablet, include a cloud-based digital video recorder (DVR) service, and bring services such as HBO Go to their favorite devices, including mobile.

UW iSchool’s “iOn the Future” Airs Sept. 18

Ion-the-future_60In the new documentary “iOn the Future”, the UW’s Information School highlights how using technology to make information accessible to everyone can improve our world and help change people’s lives. The program focuses on recent projects like cybersecurity training, disaster response, and documenting the Rwanda war crimes tribunal. Paley_60The Paley Center for Media iCollection provides streaming video for over 15,000 television and radio programs, including advertisements, for research and education. Use this resource provided by UW Libraries to find programs by title, airdate, or subject, and create a personalized collection. Check out the Center’s Special Collections such as the 9/11 one with over 1,000 hours of programming from fifty countries.

Bill Gates: CSE Distinguished Lecture Airs November 15

Online “Living Voters Guide” Developed at UW

Voter_60A novel approach for improving civic discussions, embodied in an interactive citizen-generated guide to local ballot issues, is the topic of the CSE Colloquia that aired on UWTV November 6. On the program, “The Living Voters Guide: Supporting Reflective Public Thought”, Computer Science and Engineering’s Alan Borning and Travis  Kriplean discuss this approach and how it could be used for decision making on other issues. Do-it Students in the UW’s DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking and Technology) program are featured in a series of 12 UWTV videos. They speak about the adapted environments and technologies that help them have equal access to learning and employment opportunities. Some of these individuals are in the DO-IT Scholars program, where high school students attend Summer Study sessions at the UW to prepare for college and careers.

Cse The UW CSE Distinguished Lecture series presents David Culler, UC Berkeley computer science chair, on designing a more scalable, flexible, and resilient electric power infrastructure. He calls for applying Internet design principles to the electric grid. Solving Puzzles for Science: Watch UW 360 November 3

UW360 Watch UW 360 at 10:00 p.m. on November 3 to learn about Foldit, a game conceived by UW scientists to engage people in helping to advance knowledge in biochemistry. Players of all ages fold long chains of amino acids into compact three-dimensional shapes, and can excel over computers when a folding problem requires an intuitive leap or strategy shift.

New "UW 360" TV Show Features UW Faculty and Their Work

UW360 A new 30-minute magazine-style show, UW 360, showcasing UW faculty work, premieres October 6 at 10:00 p.m. Produced by UWTV in conjunction with UW Marketing, the show features short segments that look at a wide range of UW-related topics, including solar energy and undersea footage launched from the UW research vessel Thomas G. Thompson via a network set up by UW Information Technology engineers.

Hosein Media Space, hosted by UW Professor Hanson Hosein, will engage thought leaders on the hottest issues of the digital media age – technology, entrepreneurship, community, and entertainment. UWTV Prepares for a Future Snowy Day

Satellite Ever wonder about the large satellite dish perched atop Kane Hall? UWTV recently installed a de-icing device to keep the satellite signal strong when snow falls, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the university’s communication infrastructure on campus and beyond. The Aerospace Engineering Research Building dish kept UWTV up and running during installation.

UWTV UWTV's new YouTube channel provides access to UWTV's best programming in YouTube's familiar format, and makes it easier to watch on your mobile device. For iPhone users: Bring up http://m.youtube.com/UWTV on Safari, tap the plus sign, and tap Add to Home Screen to add UWTV's YouTube site as an app. For other smart phones, bring up and bookmark the same Web page.
